999

The 999 phone charging myth is an urban legend which claims that if a mobile phone has low battery then dialling 999 and immediately disconnecting charges the phone battery. This was confirmed untrue by British police.[1][2]

Origin[]

The myth is believed to have originated on BlackBerry's forums. The basis of the myth was a feature on BlackBerry phones. If the battery level was too low, the phone automatically locked down phone features and shut down the phone radio for all calls except emergency services.

iPhone Bug[]

It was revealed that if you asked Siri, a virtual assistant on Apple's iOS mobile operation system, to "charge my phone 100 percent" then it started calling emergency services. The Verge suggested this could be useful in a home invasion scenario. This bug was later fixed.[3][4]
